the nlcs of 2003 was an exciting series with lots of ups and downs, but ultimately the cubs would be kept out of the world series again. if the cubs won it would have been their first trip to the world series in 1945. the last time they won the series was in 1908. however, this series was packed with lots of excitement. it broke the records for combined homers, combined hits, extra base hits and runs in the nlcs history. |

the nlcs of 2003 was an exciting series with lots of ups and downs, but ultimately the cubs would be kept out of the world series again. if the cubs won it would have been their first trip to the world series in 1945. the last time they won the series was in 1908. however, this series was packed with lots of excitement. it broke the records for combined homers, combined hits, extra base hits and runs in the nlcs history. josh beckett josh beckett pitched in relief to shut down chicago and seal a 9-6 win and the national league championship for the marlins. in the first game of the nlcs series between the chicago cubs and the florida marlins, the cubs took a quick four-run lead in the first inning. grudzielanek and ramirez each had a triple in the first while alou contributed with a homer. unfortunately, the marlins took the lead in the third inning with five runs. sammy sosa came back in the ninth to tie the came at 5-5, but an 11th inning homer by mike lowell of the marlins ended the game with a marlins win. the second game of the series started out much the same way, but with a more favorable ending for the cubs. it was a 12-3 victory for the cubbies to put the series at 1 and 1. kenny lofton had 4 hits, grudzielanek had a single and a double, and sosa had a monster 495 foot hit. altogether the cubs had 16 hits for the game. the series was now tied 1-1 with the momentum in favor of the cubs on the way to florida. game 3 of the series was a hard-fought game, but eventually the cubs prevailed to make the series 2-1 in their favor. it was a nail-biter for cub’s fans as woods faced pudge of the marlins in the fifth with one man on. woods was able to strike him out without any damage done. however, the seventh inning was just as dangerous when rodriguez put the marlins ahead. the cubs came away with the win in the end however. the cubs were able to continue their winning streak in the next game by defeating the marlins 8-3. ramirez had 6 rbis with a grand-slam that came in the first inning to put the cubs just one win away from the world series. ramirez’s grand slam was only the seventh in the history of the lcs. at the end of the third inning the cubs had a 6-0 lead. the cubs had not won three straight post-season games in the 1907 world series, but they were now leading the series 3-1 with one more game to be played in miami. mark prior mark prior is 11-1 with a 1.47 era since august, including a two-hitter over the braves in game 3 of the nlds the streak would not continue for the cubs in the next game. the marlins took game 5 of the series. the pitcher for the marlins, beckett, only let the cubs have two hits for the game. the marlins were able to come away with four runs with lowell hitting a two-run homer and rodriguez and conine each having one. the cubs were still only one game away from winning the series heading back to their home field in chicago. chicago`s kenny lofton (left) and moises alou chicago`s kenny lofton (left) and moises alou have trouble coming up with the ball hit nearly to the ivy by mike mordecai in the eighth inning. game 6 brought back old memories for cubs fans and the curse. the marlins took game six to tie the series t 3 a piece and force a game 7. only three teams in history have come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the pennant. the cubs began the game with a two-run lead but things went bad. an error by gonzalez led to a two-run double by derrek lee and the marlins went on to score six more runs destroying the cubs. game 7 of the series was possible the most important game in cubs history since 1985, the last time the cubs were in the nlcs. the lead changed possession 3 times during the course of the game. the marlins took an early 3-0 lead, but the cubs came back with wood smashing a long ball to tie and alou hitting a two-run homer to put the cubs up 5-3. the marlins then took control again and the cubs never recovered. the game ended with a florida victory 9-6. the curse has yet to be broken fo... |
